NEIL SWENSON

     Neil James Swenson, a devoted family man, outdoorsman and friend to many, passed away June 7, 2025, following a tragic mountain biking accident. He lived his life with happiness, enthusiasm and so much love.

     Neil carried with him a deep appreciation for nature and the community he built along the way. He was a man of integrity, kindness and unwavering generosity, always willing to lend a hand or share a laugh. His love for adventure was more than a hobby—it was a way of life, one that connected him with people and places that left a lasting mark on his heart.

     Neil was born July 2, 1960, in Neillsville, WI. He graduated from Neillsville High School with the class of 1978 and went on to earn a degree in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire in 1982. His career in water treatment chemical sales took him throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, where he built both professional connections and friendships. In between customer visits, he occasionally carved out time to enjoy a bit of fishing too.

     Neil is survived by his adored wife of 40 years, Susan Swenson, and loving daughters, Angela (Matthew) Peterson and Morgan (Logan Smith) Swenson. He was a proud grandfather to Elaine Peterson and Marshall Peterson, whose lives he touched with his optimism, warmth and goofy sense of humor. Neil is also survived by his brothers, Mark (Karen) Swenson and David (Linda) Swenson; his sister, Kay (Gregg) Aiken; sisters-in-law Linda (Gary) Kirst, Theresa (Mario) Fraboni, Jeanne (Robert) Stephens and Sandra (Jon) Radtke; brothers-in-law Timothy (Valerie) Graf and Charles (Angela) Graf; and numerous nieces and nephews. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of his kindness, humor and adventurous spirit.

     Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin Swenson and Fern Swenson, whose love and guidance shaped the man he became. He is also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Patricia Graf, and father-in-law, George Graf.

     Neil’s greatest love in life was his family, who he talked about frequently and loved spending time with. Anyone who knew Neil could attest to this. He had endless pride for his wife, daughters and grandchildren, whom he would do anything to support. Neil shared many adventures, lessons, meaningful conversations and laughs with his family. While his family aches at losing him, they are devoted to living life to the fullest in his honor and will do so by remembering all he taught them.

     In keeping with his giving spirit, Neil chose to donate his organs, ensuring that even in his passing, he continued to bring hope and life to others. His legacy of compassion, selflessness and a zest for life will live on through these gifts and those fortunate enough to know him.

     A celebration of life will be held in his honor Sunday, Sept. 7, from 12-3 p.m. at the Hilltop Classroom at Belwin Nature Center (1553 Stagecoach Trail South, Afton, MN 55001). Lunch will be served. In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends of the Boundary Waters are appreciated to support and protect a place Neil loved. Rest in peace, Neil. Your adventurous spirit and kind heart will ride on forever.
