SCOTT H. MASON

 

     Scott Henry Mason, 85, passed away March 2, 2024, at the Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield surrounded by family. 

     Scott was born July 11, 1938, in Stanley, WI, the son of Henry and Grace (Smally) Mason. He was raised on the family farm south of Thorp and received his education at Butler School.

     In 1957, Scott joined the National Guard followed by the Army from 1961-1962. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, WA, for two years with training for “Bay of Pigs” conflict.

     After his military service, Scott returned to Thorp and worked for Huberty, delivering gas. Sept. 1, 1973, he was united in marriage to LaVonne Stuart. They had a great marriage that spanned 50 years and 6 months. Scott operated the Union 76 Gas Station in Thorp from 1969 to 1975. He then took over his father’s farm in Butler Township and farmed there until 2005, when he retired.

     Scott enjoyed many interests from making maple syrup, hunting, fishing to gardening. After his retirement, he started baking and he taught himself how to sew. He enjoyed making quilts and blankets for many of his family members. He also made shelves for the salt and pepper shaker collection. He loved spending time with his grandkids, and especially enjoyed taking them fishing.

     He was a member of the Thorp American Legion Post 118, the 40/8Voiture Locale #821, the Thorp Sportsman’s Club, the Thorp Moose Lodge and the Thorp Methodist Church. He was very active with the American Legion and served as a sergeant-of-arms for Post 118 and Clark County.

     Scott is survived by his wife, LaVonne; his children, Steven (Frances) Mason, Nichole (Kari) Schmidt, Valerie (Will) Mason, Ryan Mason and Jonathon “Boots” (Michelle) Mason; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren with another one on the way; three siblings, Charles (Iona) Mason, Sam (Pat) Mason and Darwin “Punky” (Ricky) Mason and many relatives and friends.

     He was preceded in death by his parents.

     Funeral services for Scott will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Thorp Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the Thorp Funeral Home. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Town of Butler Cemetery.

     The Cuddie Funeral Home in Thorp is assisting Scott’s family with funeral arrangements.
